Opener hums but the door won't move?

You press the button, the motor hums or buzzes, but the door doesn't budge. That specific symptom points to a short list of causes — and one of them is a quick, cheap fix.

Hum but no motion: the usual cause

When the motor energizes (you hear it) but nothing turns, the most common culprit is a failed start capacitor — a small component that gives the motor the jolt it needs to start spinning. When it dies, the motor hums but can't get going. It's an inexpensive part, but replacing it means working inside the opener's power components, so it's a pro fix, not a DIY one. The good news: it's usually a fast, low-cost repair rather than a whole new opener.

Rule out a binding door first

Before blaming the opener, pull the red emergency release and lift the door by hand (only if the springs are intact — if a spring is broken, stop). If the door is heavy, sticks, or won't stay put halfway, the problem is the door, not the opener — a broken spring, a bad roller, or an off-track panel is making the opener strain until it can't move the load. Fixing the door fixes the 'opener.' If the door glides smoothly by hand but the motor still only hums, it's the opener's internals.

When it's time for a new opener

If the opener is fifteen-plus years old, hums on every start, or has already had a capacitor or gear replaced, repair stops making sense — you're putting money into a unit near the end of its life, and old openers lack Florida-required battery backup and modern safety features. We'll always tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement is the smarter spend. See our opener installation options.

Questions, answered.

01.Why does my garage door opener hum but not open?+

Usually a failed start capacitor — the motor energizes but can't start turning. Sometimes it's a binding door making the opener strain. Pull the manual release and lift by hand to tell which.

02.Is a garage door opener capacitor expensive to replace?+

No — the part is inexpensive. It's a pro repair because it involves the opener's power components, but it's far cheaper than a new opener.

03.Should I repair or replace a humming garage door opener?+

Repair if the opener is newer and otherwise healthy. Replace if it's 15+ years old, repeatedly failing, or lacks battery backup and modern safety sensors.
