Garage door safety for kids and pets.

The garage door is the largest, heaviest moving thing in a home. A few checks keep it safe for the whole family.

Test the auto-reverse

Place a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door’s path and close it. The door must reverse on contact. If it doesn’t, the safety system needs adjustment immediately — this is the single most important safety check.

Check the photo-eyes

The sensors near the floor should stop and reverse the door if anything (a child, a pet, a toy) crosses the beam while closing. Keep them clean and aligned.

Habits that matter

Keep remotes out of kids’ reach, mount wall controls high, never let anyone run under a moving door, and teach kids the door isn’t a toy. If your opener predates 1993 it may lack photo-eyes entirely — that’s a reason to upgrade.

Questions, answered.

01.How do I test my garage door’s safety reverse?+

Lay a 2x4 flat in the door’s path and close it — it must reverse on contact. If not, have the safety system serviced.

02.Are old garage door openers safe for kids?+

Openers before 1993 may lack photo-eye sensors. If yours can’t reverse on an obstruction, replace it.

03.How can I make my garage door safer for pets?+

Keep the sensors clean and aligned, test the auto-reverse, and never close the door without a clear line of sight.
