Garage door sensors acting up?

The two photo-eye sensors near the floor are the most common cause of a door that won’t close. Here’s the fix order.

Updated June 2026South Tampa · Bayshore

Clean them first

Wipe both lenses. In Tampa, pollen and lovebugs coat them seasonally. A dirty lens reads as a blocked beam and the door refuses to close.

Check alignment

Each sensor has an indicator light. Both should be steady. If one blinks, gently adjust its angle until it’s solid — they have to ‘see’ each other across the door.

Sun glare and wiring

Late-day Florida sun can blind a sensor through the open door — a small sun shield fixes it. If lights are off entirely, a wire may be loose or a staple pierced the cable. That’s a quick service call if you’re not comfortable tracing it.

Questions, answered.

01.Why won’t my garage door close — it just reverses?+

Almost always the safety sensors. Clean both lenses and make sure their lights are steady and aligned.

02.Why is my garage door sensor light blinking?+

A blinking light means misalignment or a blocked beam. Adjust the sensor until the light is solid and clear the path.

03.Can sunlight affect garage door sensors?+

Yes — direct low sun can blind the receiver. A small shield over the sensor solves it.
